On Leaks |

At roughly 10:40 this morning, I realize my ceiling is leaking and has been for some time. Now, "leaking" is really an understatement, "raining" would be more like it.
Curiously enough, outside it's picture-perfect.
At any rate, I pull some towels up and try to contain this leak. For the next ten minutes, I pull stuff out of my closet and set up the two garbage cans in the room to catch the water coming from the light and smoke detector. I also put towels around the closet to try and prevent it from spreading to my computer -- the closet is right next to my desk, which is where I have a fridge, printer, computer, monitor, iPod, minifan, speakers ... most of my electrical equipment, really.
Then the fire alarm goes off right before I can call Maintenance.
Wonderful, no?
So outside I'm talking with people, and it hits me: "You know ... it's probably the smoke detector in my room that set it off. I bet you the water coming through it shorted it out." That's Clue #1.
The fire alarm finally gets shut off, and we go back to our rooms. The leak is ... well, much less obvious now. It's only coming from the light and smoke detector. However, the floor near the closet is soaked.
I finally get to call up Maintenance, and she says, "Yeah, major leak, right? We know. It's already been called in and the Quad Director was supposed to take a look at it." That's Clue #2.
Then my R.A. comes in (the door is open at this point and I'm talking with Ravi about the leak) and says, "Holy [expletive removed]." I ask him about the smoke detector, and he says, "Yeah, that's what the box downstairs says. I saw the room number on my wing and was like, 'crap.'" That's Clue #3, or really, that's the answer, because ... well, it was me.
Whee.
There is now hammering on the roof above my room. I hope they fix this. I like my stuff IN my closet, instead of piled up in my room. Between the stuff and the water-soaked carpet, about half my room is unusable.
Oh, and it's DIRTY water. Which means that three bath towels and two face towels are shot. I wonder if I can get Stony Brook to pay for them.
... haha. And maybe they'll come, apologize for the leak, and remit our tuition for the rest of the time we're here.
